- ★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆I did extensive research on a bank to bring my new-to-America au pair to to open up a personal checking account so that I could direct deposit her weekly stipend and she can learn about how banking in the USA works. I chose Bank of North Carolina because it was highly rated and did not charge high fees for a checking account or require a minimum balance. Sadly, it was a very embarrassing and humiliating experience. The bank rep came up and asked us if we were with an organization we had never heard of (which was a little awkward) and then we sat down, and I started to explain that we needed to open an account for her. My au pair (who is from Vietnam) began taking out her passport and paperwork. When the rep saw her green passport her demeanor changed visibly. She got a sour look on her face and looked tense or angry (I'm not sure which). She cut me off and said that my au pair would require a driver's license to open an account. I tried to explain her situation, but the rep kept interrupting me and repeating the same sentence over and over. Her manner was very rude and she would not allow me to explain or ask about any other options. She told us to go to another bank, and that her bank would not allow my au pair to open an account without a North Carolina driver's license or identification. She did not ask me about my identification or if we wanted to set up another type of account where I could transfer funds for my au pair. I am a North Carolina resident. This woman was so rude that the au pair and I left the bank embarrassed and my au pair was in tears. She made us feel very unwelcome.By Bekki Buenviaje, January 11, 2017
